Swim is a winter sport for St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School student-athletes in grades 6-12. Practices begin in mid-October and the season runs through early-February.
The Vikings exploded onto the swim scene in the 2016-2017 school year, the team's inaugural season. Vikings swam in various individual races, including freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breast stroke. We also competed two relay teams. Brandon Newton (St. Anne-Pacelli Class of 2017) earned a spot at the State GHSA Swim Meet last year in the 100 yard breaststroke. In the 2017-2018 school year, two members of the Vikings Swim Team were named to the Ledger-Enquirer's All-Bi-City Team.
Head Vikings Swim Team Coach Kristin Turner is in her 13th year at St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School and serves as our High School Counselor. She is in her 2nd year as the Head Coach of the Vikings Swim Team, and was a competitive cheerleader in college.
"Watching our swimmers over the past two years has been a truly rewarding experience," Mrs. Turner says. "We had swimmers of various years of experience on the team, from veteran swimmers to Vikings who were new to formal swimming. One of the things I loved seeing is how each swimmer was able to work, grow, and experience success within their individual events, while also encouraging one another as a team. Each swimmer was competing against themselves and their previous times, and swimmers competed in the races that were comfortable for them. From a fast freestyle to a coordinated butterfly, breaststroke, or backstroke to a long series of laps, each swimmer can find the events that are right for them. What a wonderful, fun community of athletes and coaches to join!"
In May 2018, Leah Gingrich joined the St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School family as a Vikings Swim Team Coach. Gingrich made her way to Columbus, Georgia from Pennsylvania after coaching for three years in Harrisburg for the West Shore YMCA where she had swum as an age grouper. Prior to coaching, most of her swimming experience comes in the form of an athlete. Gingrich was a member of the University of Texas swimming team from 2008 until 2012. As a member of the Longhorns, she was a two-time All-American, four-time Honorable Mention All-American, six-time Big 12 Champion, and five-time finalist at the USA Swimming National Championships. She has been a member of the Junior National Team, World Youth Team, Pan American Team and World Championship Team where she competed both in the pool and in open water races. She was a two-time Olympic Trials finalist in 2008 in the 200 fly and 800 free where she finished 8th in both events. Gingrich has been featured in Swimming World Magazine, Swimswam, and Floswimming over the course of her career. As of this year, she still holds three YMCA National Records as a member of the West Shore YMCA from 2008, some of the oldest records on the books at those championships. As a member of her East Pennsboro High School team she was a four-time NISCA All-American, six-time Individual State Champion in Pennsylvania and two-time Pennsylvania State MVP.
