Intermediate: 3rd-5th Grades

Language Arts
A literature-based reading program, with an introduction to chapter novels, exposes students to various genre: poetry, biography, historical fiction and fiction. The writing process is incorporated into all aspects of the Language Arts program. In 3rd grade, students focus on writing paragraphs which contain a topic sentence, details, and a concluding sentence. In 4th grade, writing activities include paragraphs, journals, creative writing, and summaries. In 5th grade, the writing process is used in developing descriptive paragraphs, personal narratives and persuasive writing. Students will learn different ways to organize and develop each of the paragraph types.

Recognizing that we live in a digital world, all of our 5th grade students have their own Chromebooks and use them daily to build digital writing portfolios, post and submit class assignments through Google Classroom, and build knowledge and practice essential research skills.

Mathematics
A combination of hands-on activities, cooperative groups, textbook exercises, and appropriate technology are utilized for instruction in fundamental addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Critical thinking skills are incorporated throughout the year to develop problem solving strategies. Metric and standard measurements, statistics and probability, fractions, Geometry and adding and subtracting decimals are also studied.

Social Studies
The Social Studies curriculum encompasses the study of the United States and its relationship to the world through engaging geography lessons and historical studies ranging from the growth of our nation to modern times. The past is related to current events. Lessons are enhanced through hands-on projects, use of technology, and field trips to museums and historical sites in our community.

Science
Third through 5th grade Science further develops abstract thinking which allows students to gain an understanding of the natural world around them. They are engaged in inquiry-based lessons while relating scientific concepts to their growing faith. Students enjoy attending weekly Science Lab where lessons in Math, Physics and Computer Science concepts come to life with hands-on, engaging activities.

Religion
The Church as a community-builder is stressed in 3rd grade. The focus in 4th grade is on a Christian moral life with loving service to others. In 5th grade, students study the seven sacraments and the gifts of faith, hope and love.

Other areas of study in our intermediate grade levels include Art, Music, Media, Physical Education and Dual Language. New in 2022-2023: Fifth graders will be introduced to our Disney Codeillusion courses.

Our gifted program exists for those 3rd-5th graders who qualify.
