Intermediate: 3rd-5th Grades
A literature-based reading program, with an introduction to chapter novels, exposes students to various genre: poetry, biography, historical fiction and fiction. The writing process is incorporated into all aspects of the Language Arts program. In 3rd grade, students focus on writing paragraphs which contain a topic sentence, details, and a concluding sentence. In 4th grade, writing activities include paragraphs, journals, creative writing, and summaries. In 5th grade, the writing process is used in developing descriptive paragraphs, personal narratives and persuasive writing. Students will learn different ways to organize and develop each of the paragraph types.
A combination of hands-on activities, cooperative groups, textbook exercises, and appropriate technology are utilized for instruction in fundamental addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Critical thinking skills are incorporated throughout the year to develop problem solving strategies. Metric and standard measurements, statistics and probability, fractions, Geometry and adding and subtracting decimals are also studied.
The Social Studies curriculum encompasses the study of the United States and its relationship to the world through engaging geography lessons and historical studies ranging from the growth of our nation to modern times. The past is related to current events. Lessons are enhanced through hands-on projects, use of technology, and field trips to museums and historical sites in our community.
Third through 5th grade Science further develops abstract thinking which allows students to gain an understanding of the natural world around them. They are engaged in inquiry-based lessons while relating scientific concepts to their growing faith. Students continue studying coding and robotics in weekly Science Lab. The lessons teach Math, Physics and Computer Science concepts using hands-on, engaging activities.
The Church as a community-builder is stressed in 3rd grade. The focus in 4th grade is on a Christian moral life with loving service to others. In 5th grade, students study the seven sacraments and the gifts of faith, hope and love.
Other areas of study in our intermediate grade levels include Art, Music, Media, Physical Education, Spanish and Technology.
